The Art of Tea and Tasseomancy and Mystic Tearoom
1367 Main St E, Hamilton, Ontario L8K 1B8
Join Iyalorisha Omirola, Dr. Stacy C. of Ile Omirola in Mount Clemens, MI and Olorisha Oshunnike, David G. of Ile Oshunnike in Hamilton, Ontario, who are both members of Orisha Community of Michigan and Oloshas United Michigan, for an evening of education and exploration of Orisha worship via Lucumi cultural practices. Lucumi religion is also sometimes referred to as Santeria.
Over a three hour seminar we will discuss the African slave trade, the first Elders of the Orisha traditions of Cuba, how Lucumi practices were structured to ensure the survival of Orisha religion in the Diaspora and how those structures endure today in both old and new manifestations. We will discuss the foundational importance of Ancestor worship, religious hierarchy within our traditions and primary Orishas that represent the foundation of Lucumi practices as well as touch upon accessing the Orisha through a Priest's shrines or through nature, who can represent the Orisha as a Priest and what is or isn't appropriate behaviour in interacting with Orishas according to Lucumi cultural practices.
We'll look briefly at the systems of divination employed by Olorisha and Awo Ifa among the Lucumi and talk about the importance of divination in determining not only one's path in Orisha religion, but in life itself. We wil also touch upon the complications that can arise when Orisha religion intersects with Paganism & Wicca, who is or isn't a functioning Orisha Priest with the license to conduct ceremonies and rites and ways to spot charlatans, frauds or even legitimately initiated people of bad character who may be taking advantage of uneducated outsiders or seekers. We'll finish our evening with a discussion on healthy and safe ways to explore Orisha religion, how to select a godparent and a question/answer period for attendees.
Handouts will be provided covering suggested reading for further self study and links to reliable sources of information on various branches of Orisha religion as well as contact information of the presenters will be provided.
