Tom Works Nights (Aleks Vujosevic / Canada / 15m)

Tom Noonan stars in a surreal film about a lonely Janitor. We follow him through the mundane task of his routine, his infatuation with a coworker, and the questioning of his own sanity. Despite the film's sense of dread, it has sprinkles of dark humor and a Lynchian sensibility.

The Fruit Machine (Omer Khan / Canada / 16m)

During the 1950's and 60's, at the height of the Cold War, the Canadian government was doing everything it could to gain an advantage. Major shifts were happening within the RCMP, military, and civil services. A device was introduced to test the stress levels of workers by measuring pupillary response to certain images. This device was called: The Fruit Machine.

Marleau, a military hopeful, is forced to take one of these suspicious tests, under the scrutinizing eye of Captain Kovacs. On a projection screen, Marleau is shown pictures that range from the mundane to the profane — some of which trigger memories for Marleau. He finds himself re-living moments of his past relationship with his one who got away, a man named Sam.

Blackpowder and Guilt (Faran Moradi / Canada / 25m)

n 1970's rural Canada, a dishevelled man revisits the forest where he was forced into adulthood at the age of eleven. The man must come to terms with the guilt of his past as his memories stagger between the image of his father's rifle, the disintegration of his family and the disappearance of his younger brother.

Backstory (Joschka Laukeninks / Germany / 8m)

As a young child our protagonist is left by his mother and has to live with his violent father. He fights his way through adolescence and falls in love with the woman of his dreams and just as everything seems to be finally working out for him, a sudden event changes the course of his life forever. A story about how everything we love, everything we learn, everything we build, everything we fear, will one day be gone.

The Peculiar Abilities of Mr. Mahler (Paul Philipp / Germany / 29m)

East Germany, 1987: The special investigator Mahler is said to have paranormal abilities. The police assigns him to solve the case of the 6-year-old Henry Kiefer, who is missing for weeks now, before this issue leads to political tensions with the West. But then he brings something to light that makes this family tragedy especially political.
