Southern Ontario Anarchist Bookfair

A regional bookfair in the Steel City!

Saturday, March 3rd 10am-5pm & Sunday, March 4th 11th 11am-4pm.

This winter, on Saturday March 3 and Sunday March 4, Hamilton will be hosting a two day-long Anarchist Bookfair. This event will welcome all those interested in anarchist and anti-authoritarian ideas for a weekend of workshops, presentations, assemblies, film screenings, info tables, book sellers, and social events. Our goal is to provide a balance of activities that are geared both towards folks who are completely new to these ideas and those seasoned veterans who have been around the anarchist block. Our hope is to create a space where people from across Southern Ontario can come together to connect, share resources, discuss their projects, and lay the groundwork for more strength and collaboration.

The event will introduce anarchist ideas, histories, and practices, as well as provide a space for more in-depth conversations about anarchist involvement in practical, on-the-ground struggles and organizing. Beyond providing space to discuss the relevance of anarchism, we aim to provide space to discuss critically some of the challenges and shortcomings of contemporary anarchist politics and brainstorm ways to overcome them. Our anarchism is not exclusively that of old dead white men, and we want the bookfair in all its aspects to reflect this.

Workshops and Assemblies:

Acknowledging the importance of fighting where you stand, an emphasis will be placed on hosting workshops that are grounded in and relevant to local organizing efforts. We are hoping to bring together radicals and revolutionaries from throughout the region to strengthen existing relationships and build new networks – we want to chat about ways to foster a resilient movement, engage in critical dialogue, and facilitate strategic discussion. We want to think big and make even bigger plans.

We invite you to send us proposals for workshops you might like to run. Below are some of what we would specifically be excited to host, but there are surely tons of topics we haven't thought of, so get in touch!

We are looking for workshops on: anarchist engagements with anti-fascism and strategies for confronting the far right; anarchism, decolonization, and indigenous resistance; confronting gentrification; fighting against white supremacy and building an anti-racist anarchism; class struggle and intersectionality; anarcha-feminism, queer anarchism, and centering gender; prison abolition and community-based justice; debates on approaches, tactics, and strategies of anarchism; anarchist struggles abroad and lessons to be drawn.

Tabling and Displays:

A central component of any bookfair, the event will host a large room for infoshops, booksellers, activist groups, and independent publishers to distribute literature and goods. Our intention is to bring in tablers from throughout the continent to showcase a diversity of new and old anarchist books, pamphlets, zines, periodicals, and other propaganda. While much of the materials will be for sale, there will be a large selection of items that will be available for free, sliding scale, or by donation. We want people to be able to get their hands on anarchist literature without having to engage in any type of capitalist monetary exchange.

Are you interested in tableing at the bookfair? Get in touch, tell us about your distro, and reserve a spot!

Accessibility:

The Bookfair Collective is committed to making the event as accessible as possible. We realize that society is marked by structural barriers that exclude and marginalize people on a daily basis, and we strive to create an inclusive event that does not replicate such barriers. The bookfair will be held in a wheelchair-accessible venue with gender-neutral washrooms; admission is free; lunch, childcare, and family oriented programming will be offered.

Billeting:

As mentioned previously, the bookfair hopes to bring together people from throughout the region to chat, strategize, build and deepen relationships and networks. To that end, we will be organizing billeting for out of town guests. If you need a place to stay while you attend the bookfair, get in touch and we'll do our best to find you a spot.
