Exhibition Platforms, Special Projects, Film Festival and Residency Program

Hamilton Artists Inc. is seeking dynamic proposals from artists, collectives and curators at various stages of their careers and from across disciplines for its exhibition platforms, which include the Cannon Gallery; James Gallery; Cannon Project Wall; and ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard. The Inc. is mandated to exhibit a range of disciplines and career levels and to exhibit a cross-section of artists from local, regional and national communities. New in 2018, pending funding, we would also like to encourage the submission of “special projects.” Special Projects may include, but are not limited to, independent projects diverse in nature that may happen at the gallery or off-site and might manifest themselves through happenings, print materials, digital platforms, screenings, workshops or other forms of public presentation or intervention. The Inc. also hosts a rotating artist in residence program in partnership with the Cotton Factory and Photophobia, a film festival dedicated to contemporary moving images in partnership with the art Gallery of Hamilton.
Selections criteria are informed by the Inc.’s mandated objectives. As an artist-run centre, the Inc. is interested in works/projects that have potential impact, push boundaries and engage with critical, conceptual and/or experimental contexts from a diverse range of perspectives and voices. The Inc. supports and encourages submissions showcasing artists and curators most recent endeavors as well as works that incite conversation and promote a range of intersectional narratives. We are committed to providing a platform for risk-taking and creating an inclusive space to explore expanded art practices. We are dedicated to social and cultural diversity in our programming and encourage applications from contemporary artists and curators of diverse communities and backgrounds

Hamilton Artists Inc.’s Cannon Gallery exhibition schedule is committed through to 2019. The deadline for submissions in the Cannon Gallery is December 15th, annually.
The Cannon Gallery is juried internationally and seeks open proposals from both artists and curators at all levels of their careers. Exhibitions in the Cannon Gallery adhere to, and where possible exceed, recommended CARFAC compensation to artists. Applications may be project or practice based in scope. The Selections Committee for the Cannon Gallery takes place annually and chooses 2 to 3 exhibitions 3 years in advance for the exhibition schedule. The Selections Committee is dedicated to diversity in the selections process. There are typically 5 exhibition turnovers in this space, including an annual curated exhibition by the programming director, and a dedicated graduate awards exhibition in partnership with McMaster University.

Submissions to exhibit in the James Gallery are based on annual juried calls developed by the Programming Committee. You must be a member in good standing to exhibit in this space. Priority is given to members who have not previously exhibited. The James Gallery provides a professional platform for member artists to exhibit current work. Once confirmed, exhibiting artists are encouraged to apply to the Ontario Arts Council’s Exhibition Assistance Program to help with the costs associated with mounting exhibitions. The Inc. provides a modest honorarium to member artists exhibiting in this space.

Transition & Transform
Mar. 24 – May 26, 2018
How might one transform the material refuse of late capitalism—the discarded, unwanted, cheap, or useless materials that bloat our daily lives—into new forms of aesthetic and political resistance? How might we combat the ubiquitous precarity of neoliberalism through counter-transformations of negative value through valueless objects? Is it possible for us to flip the script of consumerism to reveal the humorous, dramatic and farcical flaws of conspicuous consumption?
Aug. 30 – Nov. 3, 2018
The Inc. is looking for works that intertwine fact and fiction to interrogate the mystery, longing, and enchantment of contemporary myths. If, as Roland Barthes writes, “The function of myth is to empty reality: it is, literally, a ceaseless flowing out, a hemorrhage, or perhaps an evaporation, in short, a perceptible absence” (Mythologies 143), how might we work to reclaim practices of meaning making in everyday life to combat this hemorrhaging?
How might we unmask the motivations of myth and lay bare the impossible expectations of contemporary cultural moment? If myths “transform history into nature,” how might we denaturalize our cultural contexts to question the ubiquitous affects of uncertainty, hopelessness and mediocrity—the emotional foundations of our manufactured broken dreams?
Curated/ Self Curated Open Call
Feb. 3 – Mar. 10, 2018 and Jun. 16 – Aug. 18, 2018
The Inc. is seeking applications for a curated/ self curated exhibition to be presented in the James Gallery. Members may act as an independent curator in an exhibition featuring up to 3 artists, or include themselves in an exhibition featuring up to 3 artists. Exhibitions should have a strong thematic connecting the works on display. The committee is interested in work that displays forward thinking and experimental qualities while also evidencing theoretical, critical and/or conceptual engagement. Projects with a community engagement component will also be looked at favourably by the committee.
Cannon Project Wall and ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard
These primarily project based platforms are juried similar to the Cannon Gallery as outlined above. The Cannon Project wall is an 8’ x 36’ billboard on the side of our building located at the corner of James St. N. and Cannon, seeing upwards of 10,000 vehicular and pedestrian traffic a day. Installations are typically installed for a full year, and often take the form of a graphic vinyl banner, but are not limited to this format. Technical and engineering requirements are subject to receiving city permits. Examples of Cannon Project Wall installations can be found on our website.
The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard is a malleable outdoor space that also hosts a range of activities including an outdoor screening series and film festival. Since it’s completion in the fall of 2015, it has hosted a range of short-term installations and happenings. Applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis. We are open to a range of proposals not limited to short term installations, however, as this space is relatively new, it should be understood that the programming committee and staff are still learning with regards to managing its technical requirements. Installations should be freestanding in nature and not require any drilling into the surrounding walls or concrete. The courtyard can be locked, but is not truly secured at this time. The Inc. is not responsible for damage to works mounted on the exterior project wall or in the courtyard.

New in 2018, pending funding, the Inc. would like to encourage the submission of “special projects.” Special Projects may include, but are not limited to, independent projects diverse in nature that may happen at the gallery or off-site and might manifest themselves through happenings, print materials, digital platforms, screenings, workshops or other forms of public presentation or intervention. Special Projects are meant to be responsive and will be assessed on a case-by-case basis by the programming committee to be mounted subject to available funding. Special projects provide an excellent opportunity for individuals to engage with topical social, political and cultural issues from an ‘undisciplined’ perspective.

Hamilton Artists Inc. Cotton Factory Residency Program

The Hamilton Artists Inc. Cotton Factory Residency Program is a 3-month rotating artist residency for Inc. members as well as recipients of Hamilton Artists Inc.’s Award for Distinction from the McMaster Studio Art Program, who are gifted the space for one year following graduation. The Hamilton Artists Inc. Cotton Factory Residency Program provides a valuable opportunity for artists from a wide range of disciplines and career levels to build their practice. Participating artists are encouraged to use their time to experiment, develop new ideas and learn new skills in addition to forming meaningful ties with their fellow artists in residence, Cotton Factory tenants, and Inc. members. Hamilton Artists Inc. would like to thank the Cotton Factory for its demonstrated, ongoing commitment to fostering emerging artist practices as well as their continued contribution to Hamilton’s flourishing contemporary art community.
The studio is located on the second floor of the Storehouse Building at the Cotton Factory (270 Sherman Ave. N.) in room 205.
Contemporary Moving Image Festival
Deadline: June 30, 2018

Photophobia is the 12th annual festival of short-format contemporary media, film, video and moving image hosted in partnership between the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Hamilton Artists Inc. Established in 1999, Photophobia was Hamilton’s first film and video festival dedicated to the development of experimental time-based media at a time when there were no such platforms in the Hamilton community. The Art Gallery of Hamilton and Hamilton Artists Inc. are once again partnering to showcase contemporary practitioners who test the boundaries of the medium in 2018. Not confined by restrictions or themes, Photophobia is a free festival series presented under the cover of night in the Irving Zucker Sculpture Garden at the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard at Hamilton Artists Inc.
• Submissions must be short format (15 minutes or less)
• Work must not be more than 3 years old (2014)
• All submissions must be digital Vimeo or Youtube links (private/password protected is acceptable and encouraged). Other formats will not be considered. Do not send the jury files using Wetransfer or any other transfer platform that has a time limit for hosting the files. Do not use dropbox or other cloud platforms.
• No more than one submission per artist please
• Films and videos should be independent projects, meaning that you, the artist, retain complete creative and artistic control of the project.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS – WRITERS (ONGOING)
Submissions are encouraged from regional writers interested in producing short, commissioned text for the upcoming program of exhibitions. We produce 5-6 exhibitions annually, each accompanied by a relevant and engaging text in the form of essays, creative non-fiction or short, narrative works. Selected writers will be called upon to respond to the specific content of an exhibition and produce an essay of up to 1000 words for distribution through a printed text and publication on our website. The Inc. pays a standard writers fee. While all candidates should possess some working knowledge of contemporary art, we are also interested in establishing contact with writers involved in other fields of research capable of bringing a unique perspective to topical concerns in our programming. Writers of non-art backgrounds as well as emerging artists and writers are therefore encouraged to apply.
