IN HOUSE KARATE TOURNAMENT — Saturday, November 18th, 2017
We will be running an in-house Karate tournament for our students (ages 4-13) on Saturday, November 18th. This event is open to all belt levels and competitors will be divided into multiple divisions based on age and experience levels. We will also be dividing groups by size for the sparring divisions.
There are 3 options for the kids. They can participate in one or both divisions (Sparring and/or Kata) if they are a white belt.
Yellow belts and up can also compete in the Weapons Division (Bo Staff). Weapons divisions run just like the Kata division except the student demonstrates their skills with the bo staff.
Like we’ve done in class with them during their training, students will spar with another student and try to score points with punches and kicks. Points are scored by lightly touching the opponent’s helmet or by throwing a technique very close to a target area (head/body). There is no face contact allowed and contact to the body is very light. This keeps the sparring safe and enjoyable for the children. We will be running a round robin sparring format so that the children get several matches each.
Note – we have sparring gear for the 4-13 white belts to borrow. Yellow belts and up must bring their own sparring gear if they wish to compete in the sparring divisions. Every competitor must wear a mouth guard. (we have them in the office if you wish to purchase one)
Each child will step up in front of several Instructors and perform their chosen Kata –the pre-determined routines we teach them in their classes--. The instructors will give them a score based on their focus, power, speed, intensity and technique. This is a great experience for the children and will help develop their self-confidence and self-esteem.
Here are some of the katas your child may know based on their belt.
White – Routine #1
Yellow – Kata #1 or Peinan Shodan
Orange – Peinan Nedan or Ni-Sei-Si-Sho
Note: Every competitor will receive an award for participating and challenging themselves throughout this fun competition.
If you have any questions about the in-house tournament please speak with us in the office or with Sensei Jeff Joslin.
We look forward to a fun, exciting, skill building day with our students, parents and friends.
